My Approach
Hello, there!
The way I approach therapy is like we are exploring a cave together. It can seem scary at first, but together we map out what is hard in your life, what is helping, and where you want to go. I can give some insight into paths I can see, and what we find there, but ultimately you make all the choices here! The topics we discuss and your goals for therapy are up to you, as well as the approaches that we use, our pace, and how you interpret what we find. No one plan works for everyone. We will have to adapt to how things are feeling as we go.
Okay! I’m done with that analogy and I bet you are too. What is most important for me is making sure that you understand that there is no judgment here. I will always see your good intentions and traits, and how your actions, thoughts, and feelings are caused by what you have been through, even when you can’t. I hope to help you see yourself in a more kind and accurate way.
In session, I make use of what feelings and sensations are coming up for you as we explore different topics. We will follow trailheads that may look like reactions you have had that you don’t understand, unwanted behaviours or emotions you are noticing, or things you may be avoiding or resisting. These trailheads may lead to learned beliefs from a long time ago, behaviours that used to serve you in the past when you needed them to, or painful events you’ve been through, the echoes of which may still be affecting you today. I use a trauma-informed model to help you process what has happened to you. The goal of therapy won’t be to change you, but to understand yourself better, so you have more choice in how you show up in all areas of your life.
On A Personal Note
My hobbies are always changing! One week I may be crocheting a blanket I have been working on for 3 years, and the next I may be watching every episode of my favourite tv show all over again. I love games, being in nature, different types of creative outlets, and connecting with other humans but I’m always mixing up how I do those things. One thing that NEVER changes is that I am absolutely obsessed with my cats. If we meet virtually you may meet Piper and Chewy yourself. If not, feel free to ask to swap pet pics!
